Aug 05, 2012 First, you can change the default in the Open dialog box - look for the two buttons at the upper left of the dialog. Click 'On my Mac' instead of 'iCloud' and future calls to Open should default to your local drive. (All the stranger then that there's no counterpart in the 'Save As.'

Change the default save location from iCloud to On My Mac
You have to quit and relaunch a currently running app for the change to take effect in that app.
FWIW, doing a restart and letting ML relaunch previously open apps is probably the easiest and fastest way to do this on an SSD-equipped Mac.

Isn't it a bit of overkill to use Terminal for a System Preference. Just go to System Preferences/iCloud and Turn off Documents and Data.

If you do that, then none of your apps will sync data to iCloud. This merely changes the Open/Save dialogs, and you can still put files on iCloud if you want.

Turning this off prevents what apps from syncing what data?

Data for apps that use iCloud. For example, I use ToDo to manage tasks, and it syncs using iCloud.

I can't get this to work. The defaults write command is successful, because if I read it back it returns a 0 for false (and a 1 if I revert back to true). But it doesn't change the behavior in Pages/Keynote, even after a restart.
I stumbled upon this through Secrets, but this doesn't work there either — the checkbox that pertains to this hidden pref will not uncheck.

By accident I typed 'NSDocumentSavedNew...'
I wrote SaveD instead of save. But I didn't get an error, so what did that chagne?
